About Metropolitan Police
We’re the UK’s largest police service, with around 46,000 officers and staff. We serve around nine million people across one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse cities. Our work includes tackling international terrorism, Safer Neighbourhood policing and everything in between.
Our officers and staff are at the heart of policing in the Met. Every day we rely on thousands of officers and staff who are committed to working together and with our communities and partners to successfully deliver the policing that Londoners need and deserve; people who share our values, are committed to high standards, and want to help create change for a better London.
Working for the Met doesn’t have to mean patrolling the streets. Just as important as our uniformed officers is our 14,000-strong team of professional and support staff working behind the scenes. It’s these skilled people who provide the organisational capability to police London.
If you’re looking for a challenging and rewarding role that will help you reach your potential, provide career opportunities, and make a lasting impact on communities and London, policing could be for you.
“When I used to live in Wales there was always a large presence of police officers, which made me feel comfortable and safe, but whenever I would visit London, it felt like I didn’t see as many police because it is a much bigger place. It motivated me to make people who live, work or visit London feel safe the way i felt safe growing up in Wales. My drive is to protect and serve Londoners.”

Career Opprtunities
As a police officer you can progress your career in many directions. Some officers choose to move up the promotion ladder, from a PC to Sergeant, then to and Inspector and Chief Inspector, Superintendent and beyond. Others choose to move into specialist teams, such as Firearms, Royalty and Specialist Protection, Parliamentary Protection, Mounted branch, to name but a few. The career choices are endless and are encouraged so officers get the widest range of experience possible. On the staff side we offer many entry level roles, in areas such as Forensics, Digital Data and Technology, HR, Marketing and many more. We encourage staff to seek promotion and transfers after their initial 2 years in the Met, so you could for example start in HR and move to marketing, or work your way up the promotion ladder to team lead and manage specialist teams.
